6 Tips on How to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

You decide that you can’t have something because you don’t know how to get out of your comfort zone. The comfort zone is a safe space where you know what you can expect even though you don’t like it.

Why do we get stuck in a comfort zone?

Imagine a caged animal that can’t move for most of its life. Then one day, someone releases the animal, but it doesn’t run. It stays in the spot because know boundaries are imprinted in its mind.

We’re like the caged animal. The beliefs of our subconscious mind define the edges of our cage.

Early on in life, we learn the rules that others teach us. We understand which behaviors are appropriate, what is wise to say, and when not to speak.

Our environment teaches us the edges of our cages.

Later on, most people don’t question what is possible for them. The mental training that we received when we were young is successful. Now we believe the same things as our parents and friends do.

Although we’re not caged anymore, we carry the limitations in our heads.

It’s difficult to get out of your comfort zone because you don’t know what is out there in the real world. Everything new invokes fear in you. Your subconscious mind triggers an alarm to warn you against potential danger.

What do we do when we fear something?

We either hide, run away, fight it, or judge it. How many of your decisions are run by fear rather than a choice?

The reason why you don’t know how to get out of your comfort zone is that your mind makes you feel afraid of what is behind the familiar. It creates assumptions and judgments to keep you away from the thing you want.

Has it ever happened to you that you liked something at first, but you thought you couldn’t have it, so you started to judge that thing?

That way you don’t feel the pain of not having it, and you’re happily back in your comfort zone. But what creations are possible beyond the judgment?

How to get out of your comfort zone

Before sharing my tips on how to get out of your comfort zone, I want you to know that it takes time and commitment. Your mind will try to keep you right there where you are each time you’ll try to get to the next level

I want you to keep in mind that it’s nothing personal. It’s just the way it is. Don’t get disheartened when you sabotage yourself, we all do. Just keep moving towards your goals. One little step after another.

When you want to get out of your comfort zone consciously, you’re retraining decades of your mind’s conditioning. Be gentle with yourself and if you can get someone to help you with that.

Coming out of your comfort zone is tough in the beginning, chaotic in the middle, and awesome in the end…because in the end, it shows you a whole new world !!

1. Follow your intuition

I’ll start with the best tip on how to get out of your comfort zone – follow your intuition. Unlike the mind, the intuition guides you to expand your comfort zone.

When you receive intuition, it’s your soul leading you to make the best decisions.

Very often, your intuition will want you to do something that is out of your comfort zone, and your mind will oppose it. Notice when you start analyzing your intuition and stop yourself right there.

What if you just do it and think about it later?

2. Stop asking for opinions

The people you know vibrate at a similar frequency as you do. Thus they can only give you advice that is aligned with your current life. But that’s not what you’re seeking when you want to get out of your comfort zone.

Instead, you want to give yourself a chance to find out what YOU want.

Allow yourself to take time to think about your decisions until you know what you want. And give yourself permission to fail and learn from it. Take responsibility for your decisions. It’s better than having regrets later.

3. The worst-case scenario

When you consider doing something new, imagine what the worst-case scenario is. Don’t worry that you’ll manifest it. Anyway, your subconscious mind already has this image with a strong emotional charge attached to it. So it’s more beneficial to become aware of what it is.

What is the worst thing that could happen?

When you realize what your biggest fear is, you may find out that it’s not so terrible and you can handle the consequences if things don’t turn out well. By being conscious of your fears, they lose their power over you

4. What does inspire you?

Another tip on how to get out of your comfort zone is to write a list of things that excite you. I suggest you write down all the crazy stuff you secretly dream about. This is not the place to hold yourself back.

What would you like to experience in this lifetime?

In 2013, I wrote such a list for myself. Some of the items on the list were hiking in the Himalayas, seeing Northern Lights, living in Bali, or writing a book.

Once I had the list written, I felt alive. I reread it every night before going to sleep. The list is inspired me so much that all of a sudden more painful was to maintain the status quo.

I wanted to experience all those things in my life, and I knew that it was time to start because they’ll take time. And now almost all things on my list already happened.

Let the list inspire you to get you out of the comfort zone.

5. Make an agreement with self

Another of my tips to help you get out of your comfort zone is to make an agreement with yourself. Sometimes we’re afraid of something because we don’t believe that we could handle it.

Sure, life gives you lemons sometimes. Some things can’t be predicted, and no matter how much we do everything right, challenges still happen.

No matter what happens, I’ll be fine.

Make an agreement with yourself to always support you no matter what happens. We tend to abandon ourselves when life gets difficult. But if you promised yourself to stand by your side no matter what happens, then you have a better chance to succeed at what you want.

6. Pick an out-of-box hobby

One of the ways to retrain your mind is to pick up a hobby that you’ve always wanted to do, but you thought it’s something useless.

What would you like to do or learn?

For instance, I like to study physics and astrophysics, study Mandarin or paint pictures among many other hobbies. Do I think that all of these hobbies are useful?

Well, not necessarily. But I love them anyway because it’s time for me to educate myself in something new. And for each hobby, I need to use a different part of the brain.

The more you practice something new, the more you train your brain that it’s okay to get out of your comfort zone.

So what are those things that you secretly dream about doing? Would you like to make a diving certificate or learn Italian?

Pick one hobby that challenges you in some way. Maybe it’s something that you don’t consider to have a practical use, or you think it’s too difficult.

How do you feel when you imagine yourself doing it?
